This week I was lucky to attend a pretty cool show at the Railway Club. That was a punk_goes_acoustic type of show. Dave Hause (The Loved Ones), Mikey Erg (The Ergs!), Jesse LeBourdais (Cambridge) and Steve Rawles (Belvedere, This Is A Standoff) performed acoustic sets and that was really cool.

I've interviewed Mikey Erg and Dave Hause before the show. I think it turned out pretty good. Mikey told about new album by Star Fucking Hipsters and Dave announced some exciting news regarding new music from The Loved Ones.

Here's the new episode of the show. Obviously, I've played a song by Living With Lions. If you've missed the action this week, the band was criticized by LA Weekly and the Department of Canadian heritage over their new album Holy Shit which has controversial artwork (link1, link2). No surprise, that some people are finding this album cover offensive, but I know one thing - I do really like this album and this band.

I've also played new tracks by Face to Face, Jello Biafra & the Guantanamo School of Medicine, OFF!, Fucked Up, Street Legal Dirt Bike and War Baby + some punk rock hits from the 90s.

Celebration of The Real McKenzies!

Hello Hello Hello my friends!

Todays show was focused on one band - The Real McKenzies. I wanted to do a show dedicated to this amazing band for a while. Firstly, because I absolutely love them and secondly, there is a great reason - this week The Real McKenzies have played two shows at the Media Club, March 10th and 11th.

I had a small chat over the phone with Gord Taylor, the bagpipes player in the band. He told us about their upcoming Canadian tour, logistics of the band and (!!!finally!!!) that The Real McKenzies are in the process of recording brand new studio album and they are planning to get it all together by the begging of 2012!

I also played songs by the band The Enigmas. The Enigmas were a group that formed in early 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia and Paul McKenzie was lead singer and saxophonist of the band. Their records are pretty rare, but we have them at the library @ CiTR. I obviously jumped on this chance to share their music with the listeners!

2010 is almost over and its time for "best of the year" lists. For this week’s episode I've picked my favorite albums released by local bands this year and played my favorite songs from those albums. It was really easy and really hard at the same time to pick songs to play. There is an amazing music scene in Vancouver and there are lots of brilliant bands, but I had to leave off some of them, because its impossible to fit all those great songs in one hour of radio show. I've planned two big blocks of music for that show. The first one was based on the new compilation from Fat Wreck Chords which came out 2 weeks ago. I've built the whole episode around two concerts which are happening in Vancouver this weekend - Comeback Kid, A Wilhelm Scream, Madball, Living With Lions, Devil In Me on Friday @ The Rickshaw and The Gaslight Anthem, Fake Problems, The Menzingers on Saturday @ The Commodore Ballrom.

This week I just played some music. Ok! Yesterday was great! I had my good friend Tim Krysko over on the show. He is the first guy I’ve met in Canada and he discovered lots of amazing bands for me. Ugh……Hi!!!

This is me, Tim! Hi!

That was a regular episode of We All Fall Down. Last week I went to Scratch Records and bought some really cool 7”s and I played some of them on the show (Night Birds, The Methadones, Fear Of Lipstick). So the first block of songs was based on those new 7”s and all new pop punk tunes I’ve heard over the week. Also my friend’s band Rhemorha (from my hometown Novosibirsk, thats in Siberia) came back from their first big European metal festival Masters of Rock 2010, where they played with whole bunch of great metal bands, along with Canadian legends Annihilator, and I played 2 new songs from each band. Also, I gave away tickets for Cancer Bats show. Pretty success!

I was really excited about this week’s show. Last Friday I did the interview with Thomas Barnett (the lead singer for Strike Anywhere) and this Thursday I played clips of this interview on air. Thomas is a really nice person! For me it was an honor to talk to a member of the band which I really like. I was really impressed with our conversation. Outside the interview we talked about different topics and the things Thomas was saying made me confident that he really believes in what he sings about. That sounds obvious, isn’t it? But sometimes when I listen to some hardcore bands, it sounds to me that they sing about political topics, just because being a part of hardcore scene they “need” to have lyrics with political context. Thomas really believes in the words he says and I respect that.

In the interview, Thomas was talking about the song “Indian Summer” by Canadian band One Blood. I really wanted to play this song on the show and it took me 5 days to find this song, and thanks to all the people who helped me, I was able to play this amazing song on the show. This week I didn’t have any guests and I had lots of new music to play. There were too many bands I was excited to play - The Dopamines, Lowtalker, Battle Snakes, OK Pilot…actually all other bands are fantastic and I was stoked to play their amazing songs too! Yis!

I gave away a pair of tickets to go see Misfits and no one called in to get Strike Anywhere tickets. Actually, my friend Ilia whm called from Russia, answered the question correctly and technically won the tickets, but obviously he couldn’t make it to the show. I played bands from all over the world - Japan (Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Ken Yokoyama, Razors Edge, Astralmess), Germany (Balls’n’Boobs), Russia (RadioЧача), Netherlands (The Real Danger, Circle J), America (The Menzingers, House Boat, OWTH, Sick of It All) and of course Canada (Junior Battles, Fucked Up, The Brains, D.O.A., Baptists, Bone Daddies). I got to dress up as a Viking wench for a new 3 Inches of Blood video the other day. The shoot took 13.5 hours and it was in Langley, but it was worth it! The commute wasn't too bad, as I made friends with Lisa Christiansen, host on CBC Radio 3, who was kind enough to drive me there and back. I spent most of my time fondling and feeding grapes to 3 Inches lead singer, Cam Pipes, and even retreated to his tent with him at the end of the video. HA. I'll be sure to post the video when it's released in November or December.
